The Value of 3D Scanning for Improving Quality Processes within Manufacturing

Although product quality defines a corporation’s brand and reputation, companies have struggled with the costs associated with Quality measurement processes.  In an idealistic engineering environment, parts should be designed to specification and produced within tolerance each and every time, so spending money to verify manufacturing procedures and inspect parts seemed like unnecessary costs.  However, we know that this vision is unfortunately unrealistic because no matter how hard you strive for “in specification” perfection, many process, material, tooling, and environmental variables come into play when manufacturing a finished product.  In the recent years, advanced 3D scanning technology has transformed Quality into a valuable cost-saving benefit for many organizations.  From speaking with our customers, I have summarized 3 popular reasons why 3D scanning is important for improving Quality processes within manufacturing. 

It is one of the best tools for lean manufacturing. Lean manufacturing is a practice to maintain and improve quality, but minimize waste, reduce defects, and eliminate unnecessary procedures that are costly.  With today’s 3D scanning technologies, companies are able to quickly analyze their entire part, fixture, mold, tool, or die.  By having a complete visual and analytical 3D model, it takes the guess work out.  Engineers can speedily apply the correct corrective action thus greatly reducing the number of iterations and rework.

It optimizes manufacturing from concept to production for a faster time to market.  It's not just about checking parts, it’s about checking entire processes and doing it in a rapid time.  That is why we see more and more corporations investing and implementing the same 3D scanning solution throughout various departments, facilities and even with their suppliers.  Companies standardize metrology procedures so from time of concept to production, there is a sound quality procedure in place to help speed up time to market. 

It produces quantifiable data for comprehensive process improvement.  One of my favorite quotes is from H. James Harrington, “Measurement is the first step that leads to control and eventually to improvement. If you can’t measure something, you can’t understand it. If you can’t understand it, you can’t control it. If you can’t control it, you can’t improve it." If you start with poor data, the path to improve will be difficult and time consuming.  Starting with comprehensive accurate data is important to build statistical knowledge for overall process improvement. 

Throughout the years our customers have shared with us their inspiring stories and many have won internal awards for saving money and improving processes at their organizations by using our solutions.  With the right technology, Quality, what was once thought of an “unnecessary” procedure, is now a cost savings and process optimizing mechanism.

In 2004, a leading aerospace and propulsion company was in need of a metrology solution for first article inspections of their turbine blade airfoil castings.  Airfoils are organic in shape and contain intricate geometrical features that are critical for dimensional analysis and verification.  At that time, first article inspections were being performed with Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) which were heavily backlogged.  Programming a CMM for a measurement task was time consuming and with the increase of incoming projects, they needed to re-evaluate their current measuring and inspection process.  The options were to continue along the same path by purchasing more CMMs which were expensive to acquire and implement, or research for an alternative solution in hopes of increasing throughput, productivity, and return on investment (ROI).  After benchmarking several measurement technologies and suppliers, the decision was made to select Capture 3D, Inc., the North American partner and representative for GOM optical 3D metrology systems in Germany.  Several ATOS 3D scanning systems were integrated into their engineering process for 3D measurement and inspection.

New GOM Scan Software for ATOS Core Essential Line

The ATOS Core Essential Line is for applications, such as reverse engineering or rapid prototyping, which requires 3D scanning without the advanced inspection functionality.  It is an advantage for those who want to benefit from GOM quality, or enter into the world of 3D scanning, but just need the necessities. The Essential Line consists of the ATOS Core sensor, GOM Scan software, an image processing computer, and accessories.  GOM Scan software is intuitive and easy to use.  It seamlessly integrates with the ATOS Core sensor to deliver high quality 3D polygon meshes in STL format with 2 or 5 million PPS (points per scan).  It is engineered with intelligent algorithms to quickly automatically merge scans taken by the sensor to improve downstream process time and eliminate overlapping scan patch errors commonly seen in other measurement technologies.  For Quality Control applications, such as inspection, users can utilize the free GOM Inspect software, or upgrade GOM Scan anytime to add additional functionality through an instant licensing update.  Features, such as parametric inspection, touch-probe, photogrammetry and/or automation can be easily added as project requirements progress.
