Opel Automated Sheet Metal Inspection using ATOS ScanBox

Opel Automates Automotive Sheet Metal Inspection

Opel press shops utilize the ATOS ScanBox 7260, a new automated optical non-contact 3D coordinate measuring machine for large components. All of Opel's sheet metal parts for automotive models will be dimensionally verified for near line production inspection. The ATOS ScanBox solution was chosen because of its accuracy, fast measuring times, simple usability and the option of central programming offered within the VMR automated software.

BMW Additive Manufacturing using ATOS Triple Scan

Video: BMW Utilizes ATOS Triple Scan for Additive Manufacturing

"BMW Group is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the introduction of additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing. Dr. Dominik Rietzel talks us through BMW's use of 3D scanning, preparing the resulting 3D CAD model for small series production, and selective laser sintering with polymer powder. Dr. Maximilian Meixlsperger introduces us to additive manufacturing in metal, while we follow the creation of an injection mold using stereolithography, which is later cured in a UV exposure chamber, before being used to create an injection molded automotive part."

New ATOS ScanBox

GOM at Control in Germany This Week

GOM will be demonstrating the complete GOM product family with a special focus on precise automated inspection with the latest ATOS ScanBox Series 7 and 8 for automotive sheet metal inspection. Some of the highlights include:

3D Metrology

  • ATOS Triple Scan – An industrial optical 3D scanner that captures up to 2 x 16 million measuring points per scan and it is used for high-end 3D scanning, inspection, and automated inspection applications within quality control.
  • ATOS Core – A compact optical 3D scanner that offers customizable functionality for 3D coordinate measuring, inspection, and automation. It can be configured as a mobile measuring device, a stationary desktop scanner, or automated with a ScanBox.
  • GOM Inspect Free Software – Evaluation software for analyzing 3D measurement data and includes polygon mesh processing and comprehensive 3D inspection functionality. The new GOM Inspect release features an updated user interface, strong enhancements in GD&T and airfoil inspection.
  • CT Data Interface – GOM Inspect offers a new interface for importing and evaluating native CT volume data.

Intelligent Automated Inspection

  • ATOS ScanBox Series 7 and 8 – The latest ATOS ScanBox series is engineered for automotive sheet metal inspection. It is used on the shop floor in press shops and body shops for large and heavy parts, e. g. car side panels and complete car bodies. Combined with Auto Teaching functionality, the ATOS ScanBox is the ultimate measuring machine for precise and fast full-field measurement with comprehensive component analysis (e.g. hemmed edges, hole pattern, trimming, etc.). It features GOM’s new 8-axis kinematics – a combination of horizontal rail, vertical lift and articulated robot. The 8 degrees of freedom allows parts to be measured from every perspective, including car interiors.

GOM Software V8 SR1

Latest GOM Software V8 SR1

In January, the latest V8 SR1 was released which includes a multitude of enhancements with an intuitive user interface for 3D measurement, inspection, and automated measuring procedures.

Some of the key highlights include:

Intelligent Automatic Exposure Time for ATOS 3D Scanning
The software automatically calculates the optimal exposure time to further speed up the measurement process. Additionally, user-dependency is reduced and a higher repeatability is achieved. Depending on the complexity of the part, either manual or automated exposure times can be used: Spot metering for smaller objects with homogeneous gray value distribution, matrix metering for complex objects, or CAD metering for VMR automated applications.

Virtual Measuring Room (VMR) Optimization
The automatic generation of measurement positions was extended to curves, profiles, airfoils and complete surfaces. In addition, setting parameters automatically makes the burn-in process easier. The new template management simplifies the recombination of measurement and evaluation programs. Combined with the corresponding VMR, individual components of a measuring project can be transferred to other ATOS ScanBoxes. This enables rapid and easy measuring and analyzing of identically designed objects in different measuring machines.

GD&T Improvements
While incorporating the current applicable ISO and ASME standards, improvements to the GD&T feature have been added. The linear size delivers precise definitions of distance and diameter checks. The new TED pattern enables multiple geometries to be checked simultaneously. Additionally, the projected tolerance zones can be used to define deviations on complementary components. Furthermore, unilateral and bilateral tolerance zones are available for surface and line profiles and maximum/minimum material requirements can now be combined with datum systems. An extended dialog field for the datum system allows the combination of multiple elements to one common datum.

Airfoil Inspection Enhancements
The user-defined inspection principle of V8 SR1 significantly simplifies the workflow for multiple inspection sections. Along with the implemented profile mean line method, the software also includes the inverse approach of the skeleton line. This allows the determination of the thickness perpendicular from the camber line to the section. In addition, there are new functionalities to inspect profile edge circles and maximum profile thickness. A function for the cone-based unrolling of sections has been added and the evaluation function for a profile twist analysis has been improved. The introduction of the linked actual stacking point combines the nominal stacking point with the twist transformation, which allows a comprehensive section inspection.

Free GOM Inspect Software

Free GOM Inspect Software – Over 68K Downloads

GOM Inspect is free mesh processing and inspection software for dimensional analysis of 3D point clouds from structured blue/white light scanners, laser scanners, CT scanners and other sources. This software is entirely free to use and results can be shared amongst departments, vendors, and/or with customers for faster communication to help speed up the decision making process. GOM Inspect contains all of the evaluation tools necessary for extensive analysis of parts and components. It is independently tested and certified by German and American national measurement laboratories (PTB, NIST). The accuracy of the evaluation software is verified by comparing the results obtained from the software with reference results. GOM Inspect has been placed in class 1, the class of the smallest deviations.
