Catherine Kim   Inspection Software Functionality: What is Silhouette?
Catherine Kim, Marketing Manager, Capture 3D, Inc.

In the previous newsletters we discussed Back Projection (March), and Optical Tracking and GOM Touch Probe (June) which are supplementary metrology enhancements available with ATOS blue light 3D scanners utilizing ATOS Professional Live software. In this issue, we will cover the new Silhouette software functionality that is available within all of our inspection software packages, including Free GOM Inspect.

Similar to a Machine Vision System, the Silhouette software function applies a parallel projection algorithm at a plane defined by the user on the 3D mesh data to construct a 2D profile outline of the object. The outline becomes a separate section within the software to allow users to create further elements or perform additional inspections. Silhouette of partial areas is also attainable.

New Silhouette Software Feature

Silhouette is utilized for:

  • Aerodynamic drag coefficient calculation (CFD/FEA analysis)
  • Calculation of areas
  • Contour inspection
  • Detection of deviations or imperfections
  • Dimension measuring
  • Simple and fast way to measure outlines

A walk-through video using Free GOM Inspect has been posted on YouTube and can be viewed here-

Free inspection software - GOM Inspect

Free GOM Inspect Software – Over 50K Downloads

GOM Inspect is free mesh processing and inspection software for dimensional analysis of 3D point clouds from structured blue/white light scanners, laser scanners, CT scanners and other sources. This software is entirely free to use and results can be shared amongst departments, vendors, and/or with customers for faster communication to help speed up the decision making process. GOM Inspect contains all of the evaluation tools necessary for extensive analysis of parts and components. It is independently tested and certified by German and American national measurement laboratories (PTB, NIST). The accuracy of the evaluation software is verified by comparing the results obtained from the software with reference results. GOM Inspect has been placed in class 1, the class of the smallest deviations.
